In addition, our associates have worked for either Federal or state tax authorities, or both. Michael J. Tupps has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1991. Michael J. Tupps is a Certified Public Accountant, business manager, and private investor with extensive experience in taxation, tax compliance, tax planning, tax resolution, accounting, auditing, and financial management. His career spans private industry and public-sector tax agencies, with expertise in federal, state, and international tax matters. Michael founded Tupps & Associates, A Professional Corporation, and MJTCPA, Inc., which provide accounting, tax, and financial services focused on tax compliance, planning, and resolution.
Michael began his private-sector career with Shell Oil Company, where he held positions in corporate finance, accounting, and auditing. He subsequently joined General Motors Corporation, serving on both divisional and corporate audit staffs. At Hilti Western Hemisphere, Michael worked in the corporate audit and tax departments, and at The NORDAM Group he served as corporate audit director, divisional controller, and international tax manager. These roles provided extensive experience in tax reporting, tax compliance, financial controls, and the tax implications of complex domestic and international business transactions.
Michael also has significant public-sector tax experience; at the Oklahoma Tax Commission, he performed and supported tax compliance work involving sales, use, excise, and income taxes, including special tax projects related to tax policy. At the United States Department of the Interior, Special Trustee for American Indians, his responsibilities included tax reporting associated with tribal lease and income transactions. He also served on a team responsible for issuing all Form 1099s for the Department of the Interior. This combination of private-industry and government experience gives Michael a broad understanding of tax administration, compliance requirements, reporting obligations, and interactions between taxpayers and taxing authorities. He currently works for Intuit, Inc.
Through Tupps & Associates, P.C. and MJTCPA, Inc., Michael provides tax-focused accounting and financial services, including designing international and domestic tax compliance, tax planning, and tax resolution. His professional experience also includes advising businesses and individuals on tax matters, serving as an advisor and board member for for-profit and nonprofit organizations, and advising legislators and government officials regarding taxation policy. He has founded, owned, and operated multiple businesses and has served as a director of private companies in the United States and Asia, as well as president and board member of two nonprofit organizations.
Michael earned his B.S. in Economics, cum laude, and his M.B.A. from Ball State University. He also completed graduate coursework in Accounting and Taxation at The University of Tulsa and undergraduate coursework at Indiana University.
Michael holds the professional designations of Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA), and Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor. Michael has also completed over 1,400 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) courses in taxation and accounting.
